Benchmark and St Andrews University launch sustainable aquaculture courses

Benchmark and St Andrews University launch sustainable aquaculture courses.

Benchmark today announced the launch of two online sustainable aquaculture courses developed in collaboration with the School of Biology at St Andrews University, Edinburgh.

The newly developed courses are aimed at anyone wishing to further their career in the burgeoning, global industry of sustainable aquaculture. The courses are designed to minimise disruption to working lives and reduce the need for staff to leave the office in order to attend residential courses.

Both the Certificate and Diploma/Masters Course are part-time and use a variety of web-based tools and downloadable material. A team of marine scientists who specialise in the aquaculture industry tutor the courses, which include academic, practical, technical and commercial modules to suit all levels.

Speaking from Benchmark’s headquarters in Sheffield, Jim Muirhead, Director of 5m Publishing’s online aquaculture hub thefishsite.com, said: “Aquaculture is one of the world’s fastest growing industries, with an average growth rate of over eight per cent, per year, for the past 10 years. The aquaculture industry will face many challenges over the next few years to be economically, socially and environmentally sustainable. It will require trained and experienced staff to successfully address these issues and to meet anticipated future growth.”

Muirhead continued: “Benchmark was perfectly placed to partner with St Andrews to develop and deliver these courses. We have a wealth of in-house expertise via our Fish Vet Group team, as well as the capability via thefishsite.comto provide an online platform for delivery of the courses.”

The Certificate and the Diploma/Master course commenced in October 2011 and October 2012, respectively. Further information about the courses and how to register can be found at thefishsite.com
