Fish Vet Group sponsor global fish health initiative

Leading aquaculture health provider, the Fish Vet Group, will sponsor the forthcoming International Gill Health Initiative taking place in Oslo, Norway from 21 to 23 May 2014.

Run in conjunction with the Norwegian Veterinary Institute and the Norwegian Seafood Research Fund, the event is the first follow-up to the inaugural meeting of the International Gill Health Initiative held at the University of Stirling, Scotland in January 2013.

It will bring together salmon-farmers, fish health workers and scientists to present and discuss the range of management, treatment and controls for gill related diseases and conditions in sea-farmed salmon, including amoebic gill disease (AGD).

Managing Director of Fish Vet Group’s Norwegian office, Didrik Paus, commented: “Judging by the number of AGD cases at Norwegian fish farms last year, and what we know about this disease, it is clear that fish farmers will have to closely monitor the status of their fish and the effects of treatment in the years to come. Fish Vet Group have been working with this disease for a number of years in UK, Ireland and now Norway.”

“In addition to providing sponsorship, Hamish Rodger from our Irish base is part of the Steering Committee, and Sara Pflaum from our Scottish office will present our experience of AGD.”

Paus concluded: “Members of our new Norwegian laboratory will also be present to discuss how we can support the industry in Norway with managing this disease. We are already processing samples in Oslo and have an international team of pathologists – the most experienced team in aquaculture – all linked with digital microscopy to enable very fast turnaround, specialist referral, and even on-line teaching and mentoring for clients.”
